Nicolas’s 9th Birthday Memorial Fundraiser

Hi, I am Jorie Bloomer my family is known as the Henkel family at the RMH! And I am reaching out to share our story. In 2018, our youngest family member, Nicolas, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at just 16 months old. As you can imagine, our lives changed in an instant. Our parents, Jamelle and Chad, left home immediately with only the clothes on their backs and Nicolas’s diaper bag, stepping into a world no family is ever truly prepared for. This new world led us to the Ronald McDonald House in Calgary, where we ended up staying for 518 nights. During those nights, the Ronald McDonald House became so much more than shelter. It was a home. It was hot meals, warm showers, a safe space to sleep, and most importantly, it was a place our whole family could be together. For a long time, my brother Gavin and I were separated from our baby brother, our parents, and the life we had always known. But under that roof, we found each other again. And we found home again. Now, in honour of Nicolas’s 9th birthday, my mom and I are hosting a silent auction fundraiser to give back. Our goal is to raise $7,770 the equivalent of one night for each of the 518 nights we stayed, at the current cost of $15 per night. Here is where we ask for your help. We are seeking donations for our silent auction such as items or services from generous local businesses and people like you. Your contribution will directly support the Ronald McDonald House and help families like ours who are going through the unimaginable. If you are able to donate, we would be incredibly grateful. Your support would mean the world not just to us, but to the countless families who will find comfort at the Ronald McDonald House, just like we did. Nicolas, my grandson, was an extraordinary child. He taught us all valuable lessons in the short time he was on this earth. I will carry with me forever the love , joy, smiles and the suffering. All Nicolas knew was home, hospital and RMH. He probably thought every child went through challenges such as his. Whenever my grandson Riley was in his presence Nicolas would stick to him like glue. So, so many memories . Many many families have benefited from RMH and the Children’s Hospital. We all have charities close to our hearts. This is one of mine.
